2021 COVID aftermath – mindset and mental wellbeing challenges

Past year has been rough for all humans across this planet. It has changed our way of being – maybe forever. Last year it seemed frightening, as I recall my first day venturing out to office after the lockdown. This prolonged fear was something new for most of us.

But today, we have started to live with that fear, which gets triggered by external events. The second wave has sprouted new emotions, the bewilderment of unfamiliar environment, the fear of uncertainty, the pessimism from flooding negativity and the stress to address immediate priorities. And this is a deadly cocktail for the human psyche.

As a person whose profession is numbers, until last week I strongly believed that reducing the odds eliminates chances. But someone in my family, who never stepped out from his house since 2020 lockdown, passed away from COVID while someone in my circle who contracted COVID after first dose of vaccine, spent two weeks in an ICU.

Although for the above incidents, numerous theories can be suggested along with confounding factors, uncertainty remains high and odds stay unidentified. The point here is that the situation is so rapid and uncertain that your knowledge will be questioned while your methods will be challenged, continuously!

And this will spark anxiety!

Although there are alternate remedies including denial and ignorance, they will leave you baffled at the distraught moment. And I do wish, from the bottom of my heart, that you do not have to face such moment in your life. However, the point of writing this blog is to identify what is required to be equipped for all the wrong situations.

This brings us to our conclusion, amidst these times of uncertainty we need a very strong Mind (not brain) to be fully aware of the context and accept it no matter how harsh or unrealistic. At an individual level it all boils down to the mental stamina, adversity quotient, will power (as well as optimism) and calmness that you have developed over time.

And utilising these qualities you will have to master the art of balancing. Although there is looming uncertainty, you will have to stay connected with your long term vision while being completely aware of the real time situation to seamlessly mould with current context and resolve immediate priorities.

And one more thing, never lose hope

Hope may not be the best strategy but the strongest emotion that has helped humans overcome the worst

If you feel that this was helpful, please refrain from keeping it a secret.
