Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, a must read book for the success hungry Millennials

*Disclaimer: The following is a summary and/or review based on the authors understanding of the book.

Although hard work (grind) and hustle have been regarded as the key constituents of success, we tend to ignore multiple other factors that have more, in some cases most, significant contribution to success of an individual or business. And this book not only illuminates but also gracefully illustrates these usually ignored aspects!

Many times businesses are run by ordinary people, conventional strategy, usual practices and simple model, but are somehow wildly successful. We hypothesised the reason for such success as a rare combination of the right place, right time, right people, and right idea. This book ascertains our hypothesis through numerous examples across communities and industries ranging from minorities to the affluent and professionals ranging from athletes to lawyers!

And even if I extrapolate this idea to real life, I feel that the such factors truly exist and are perhaps the most significant. As regarded by startup Pundits, timing is perhaps the single most important factor. We know dozens of products that failed simply because they were too futuristic and many others that were too late and failed to compete with established players. After completing this book, I read the book ‘Triumph of the City’ which made me further realize the significance of timing and ecosystem, which are among the many such significant yet under appreciated success factors unraveled in the book Outliers.

And one of the most important success parameters he mentions is the 10,000 hour rule. It takes about 10,000 hours of practice for the human brain to recognize the patterns and master the act! To know more about this read the post on Logic Triumphs without flowcharts.

But knowledge without application falls short of wisdom! So why should you read this or in other words how is it relevant to your life, making it a worthwhile. If you are spiritually awakened or have read Paulo Coehlo, you understand that the universe communicates with you through omens and events. As we millennials are usually an ungrateful bunch, we often fail to reflect upon such instances.

But once you understand the situations, factors or coincidences that contribute to success, you might reflect upon your life and have a couple of AHA! moments that make you realize how certain seemingly ordinary events, choices or incidences have been decisive junctions in your life . But most importantly, this book makes you realise that grind, better justified as the 10,000 hour rule, is as important as the combination of the all the necessary rights.

Personally, I have had this realization with certain successes as well as failures! And being able to understand what has worked for me and what needs to work for me to realize my future aspirations is quite a boon. In fact, it can alleviate your struggles by unlocking your performance zone.

Although as Mr. Bill Gates once said that improving your odds may not guarantee success, statistically any improvement to your odds for success proportionally reduces your odds for failure. So if you are a startup founder or a success hungry millennial or a relentless entrepreneur, you should definitely read this book.
